This week we finished reading "Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo. The class REALLY enjoyed the book and today we started watching the movie. When we finish with the movie next week the students will be comparing it to the book. Today an outline and rubric went home for our Winn-Dixie Project. Students need to choose just ONE of the projects to complete by next Friday, October 4th. If you have any questions about the project at all, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Last week's Water Cycle Tests went home today. Any students who earned less than 70% were asked to have their parents/guardians sign their test and make corrections by Monday. If the test is correct and returned I will make an adjustment to their grade. Weekly reflections went home today but once again the copier was down so I was unable to print out Class Dojo totals for the week. However you can still go online from home to check out how your child's week was! Thanks and have a great weekend! _ Mrs. D

Yesterday I had the opportunity to be a part of the Language Arts Council for Eastern Connecticut. It was a great meeting and I walked away with valuable resources to share with parents and colleagues about the Common Core. Please take the time to educate yourself about the changes going on in your child's classroom. Check out the videos, brochures, and articles below. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm still learning myself, but I look forward to growing as a teacher and sharing resources from my journey with you!
Websites to Explore: Common Core Works - Parent Roadmaps and other resources PTA.org - Student Success Guides for parents for ALL grade levels! ASCD - teaching to the Common Core In Our Classroom: Each week new common core standards are posted on a bulletin board in our room. Stop in and see! Also, common core standards we are working on are listed on the tops of some of our worksheets. If you have any questions about the Common Core standards and how we are applying them in our classroom please let me know!
- Mrs. D What a busy, whirlwind of a day we have had! Unfortunately I was unable to write comments on student's weekly reflections today. If you have any questions, please contact me. I'm taking off my teacher hat now and switching into mommy mode so the full weekly update will have to wait till later this weekend. Thanks for understanding and as always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. ~Mrs. D :-)
CLass Dojo Weekly Report:Today your child is coming home with a copy of their Class Dojo report for the week along with their weekly reflection. I feel that this is a valuable tool to help track student behaviors in the classroom. Starting next week we will be rewarding students who earn 30 positive points by Friday afternoon. Those students will be rewarded with extra recess time. Students who are unable to achieve 30 positive points by Friday will take part in a group discussion to come up with ways they could make better choices in the classroom. Below are charts for the week representing our whole class. One for our morning activities/lessons, and one for afternoon. As you can see we did better in the morning this week than we did in the afternoon. I think Mother Nature's hot flashes had something to do with it though, lol! Hope you all have a GREAT weekend! Enjoy the cooler weather!
~Mrs. D :-) It's been busy week in fourth grade! We completed some more "have-to's" like benchmark literacy assessments and math pretests. We began reading "Winn-Dixie" and today students started making personal connections to the main character in the text. In math we continued to work on reviewing multiplication. Next Friday we will have a multiplication quiz so remind your children to practice, practice, practice! Our science focus this quarter is on the water cycle. We took notes from our text and today students used their notes to assemble a triangle using the words and definitions as clues. We will have a water cycle quiz next week!
Look for your child's weekly reflection in their backpack today. This is a vital piece of communication that will keep us working together as a team! I hope you all enjoy the cooler weather this weekend and take advantage of our last few days of summer! ~ Mrs. D
