We learned in class that an ecosystem is made up of all the living and nonliving things that interact in an area. Within each ecosystem there are producers and consumers. A producer is an organism that makes its own food, like plants. Consumers are animals, like us, who get our energy from eating plants or other animals that eat plants. These living things in an ecosystem are interdependent (meaning that they depend on each other to meet their needs). We all get our energy from the sun. Plants use energy from the sun to make their own food (a process called photosynthesis). Humans and animals then eat the plants to give them energy. This makes up the food chain. Ecosystems need to have a balance of producers and consumers, plants and animals, to survive. Today we are going to learn about keeping ecosystems balanced.
