We are going to begin studying our country, the United States. our first job will be to learn the 50 state and their capitals. Then we will break the country into 5 regions: the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West. Next we will discuss the resources each state and region has to offers. Finally you will be writing a report on one state of your choice.

The words we choose to use when speaking to others have POWER! They have the power to make others feel good about themselves. They also have the power to emotionally hurt others. We need to choose our words carefully. Everyone deserves to be talked to and treated with RESPECT. How do we deal with Negativity? The two songs below send positive messages about dealing with negative words from others. As you listen to the songs, pay close attention to the lyrics and the message they are sending.
When talking with classmates, please think about how your words will effect them. Use your judgement and think before you speak.

This week we took the practice test for the new SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) assessment. Continued practice will help prepare you to take the test later in the month. Online Games and Activities: Today marks the beginning of the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia. The Olympics are an amazing display of sportsmanship, determination, and courage. The competing athletes have trained their whole lives for the chance to represent their country. Their experience at the Olympic Games is one they will treasure for the rest of their lives. This year we will be bringing the spirit of the Olympics into our classroom. We will be tracking medals won, graphing data, learning about the participating countries, and researching athletes and their sports. Next week you will be choosing an athlete to research and write a biography on. As you research your athlete you will learn about the ways that he/she models sportsmanship, determination, and courage. Get Ready! Check out the videos below to help you get into the Olympic spirit:
Watch the games live! NBC is the official broadcasting station for the Olympics. They will have continuous coverage for the next two weeks. You can also watch live events online. On the website you can also find information about each sport, the competing athletes and as up-to-date medal count. 1st Assignment - Homework! AHHH! I know what your thinking… "Homework on a weekend! Mrs. Dempsey's crazy!"
RELAX, your homework is to watch TV :-) Tonight there's snowboarding, freestyle skiing, and team figure skating. Then tomorrow (Friday Feb.7th) check out the Opening Ceremony starting at 7:30pm. Other Olympic events will be aired throughout the weekend. If you can't watch it on TV then you can always watch videos online @ NBColympics.com. A lot of information has been presented to you and I know that it is overwhelming at first. Don't worry, Chillax! It all began with 3 Pieces of Paper...Three Branches of Government Our government is divided into three branches as outlined in the Constitution. These three branches are; Executive, Judicial, and Legislative. The purpose of this is to divide the power so that one branch of government does not become more powerful than another. Each branch of government has a specific purpose. To learn more check out the SchoolHouse Rock and BrainPop videos below. After watching the videos, click on the activities button (yellow pencil) in the BrainPop window and complete the matching worksheet. Print this out when your finished and hand it in to your teacher. When you feel confident that you understand the material, take the quiz on BrainPop. Print this out too and turn it in to your teacher.
