Welcome to our class blog! Our first "full" week of school is now over. I have greatly enjoyed getting to know each student in our class. We have been working hard on beginning of the year assessments and learning our daily routine. By next week I imagine that our classroom engine will be running smoothly! In literacy we have been working on how to answer open-ended questions, how to find evidence in the text to support our answers, and how to determine the theme of a text. These are all important Common Core skills that we will be working on and continuing to develop throughout the year. To help us achieve success we are piloting a new reading and language arts program this year. The text we are using is called Common Core Progress: English Language Arts, from Sadlier School. I still plan to use our old Treasures program for spelling and supplemental material. Common Core Progress is a rigorous program that is more closely aligned with the Common Core Standards our students are working to achieve. This week in math we worked on reviewing our multiplication facts and exploring place value into the millions. Our curriculum this year does not follow a set program as we have yet to find one specific program aligned to the Common Core that fits our needs. Instead we will be using materials from several different programs and sources. One source is EngageNY. They have created lessons framed around the Common Core that teach students how to explain their answers. * For more information about the Common Core and changes taking place in your child's classroom, click on the link below to check out one of my posts from last year. This week we discussed using the bathroom appropriately during the day. For example, we have 15 minutes of snack each day and students are encouraged to use the bathroom at this time instead of waiting until snack is over and lessons begin. We began our weekly reflections this week. They went home with students today and need to be signed and returned on Monday. If you have any specific questions about your child's week please email me at: [email protected]. For general questions, feel free to comment on this post. A Few Reminders:
Have a great weekend! ~ Mrs. D
